Regional Medical Group President

University of Michigan Health

Lansing, MI

The Opportunity:

University of Michigan Health (UM-H), a world-class organization, is seeking a President for the Regional Medical Group. This is a new physician led role that seeks to create one aligned and coordinated multi-specialty employed medical group through the integration of the currently separate Sparrow Health Medical Group and the University of Michigan Health Partners, the medical group for the University of Michigan Health-West.

The Position:

Reporting to Margaret Dimond PhD, Regional System President for UM-H, the inaugural Regional Medical Group President will lead the successful clinical, operational, strategic, and cultural integration and on-going management of the new Regional Medical Group. This will be accomplished through the merger of the existing and separate employed providers within Sparrow Medical Group in Lansing and the University of Michigan Health Partners, which is the employed medical group for the University of Michigan Health-West community hospital in Grand Rapids. The Regional Medical Group President is a critical leadership position for the University of Michigan and its plan for expanding high quality and coordinated care across Michigan.

The initial goal and efforts for the new Regional Medical Group President will be focused on the creation of a single multi-specialty employed medical group which in total is comprised of approximately 1003 providers (Physicians and APPs employed by UMHP, SMG and the hospital based employed providers at U-M Health-West) providing care within seven community-based hospitals and 99 ambulatory locations in and around Lansing, Grand Rapids, and other surrounding central and western Michigan communities.

While the initial focus for the new Regional Group President is to create a single and aligned medical group, important work will also focus on the creation and implementation of a well thought out strategy around clinical service development and expansion in partnership with the Regional Executive team.

A governing principal surrounding all Regional Health System and Regional Medical Group initiatives is to create and expand the capabilities around providing high quality and consistent world-class care across all locations under the University of Michigan Health System umbrella. Hence, it will be important for the new Regional Medical Group President to also develop strong relationships with both clinical and administrative leadership within the University of Michigan Academic Medical Center enterprise located in Ann Arbor. Such relationships and partnership will include physicians, clinical department Chairs and administrative leadership within the University of Michigan Medical Group, which is the faculty practice plan tied to the University of Michigan School of Medicine.

The Ideal Candidate:

• An MD or DO Degree is required, and an MBA, MHA or equivalent degree is preferred.

• Eligible for Medical Licensure in the State of Michigan and board-certified in clinical specialty.

• Active Medical Staff Member. This position will be approximately 80 -85% administrative and 15-20% clinical.

• A minimum of 7-10 years of management experience leading large multi-specialty medical groups across a wide geographic area and within a community/academic health system environment.

• Must have proven work experience in enhancing process and performance standards, as well as a proven track record and success leading satellite ambulatory physician practice centers.

• Must be a respected member of the physician community, maintain an active clinical practice and possess outstanding interpersonal and communicating skills to gain confidence, trust, and respect of leadership across Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan Medical Group.

• Experience in medical group program administration, finance, cost/benefit comparisons, analysis of budget variances, and staffing resources is preferred.

• Must have experience within a highly complex, matrixed health system environment and an ability to navigate effectively.

• Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in management principles, processes, and procedures to successfully implement institutional performance improvements. Expert in quality improvement.

• Must understand pluralistic medical staff and have experience working with both employed multi-specialty employed providers and private practice / community providers. The ideal candidate will also possess a related understanding of the differences with academic faculty.

• Experience with value-based care models and supporting population health initiatives to advance quality and delivery of care.

• Change management experience and proven ability to successfully lead during system transformation are strongly preferred.

• Integration experience is strongly preferred and ideal if someone has worked in an evolving system where an academic medical center and a community health system are coming together.

• Demonstrated track record of developing clinical service lines and helping to roll out across an evolving clinical enterprise is preferred.

• Progressive responsibility and administrative experience in programmatic strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation within a complex health system environment.

• Proven track record as an individual who works to achieve integration and alignment by promoting physicians working successfully with all members of the organization in a respectful and interdependent way.

The Organization:

The U-M Health Regional System (Regional System) includes the blending of two legacy health systems: University of Michigan Health-West and Sparrow Health System, which joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023. On September 1, 2023, a new regional leadership structure went into effect and since then the Regional System leadership have been working diligently to develop new leadership structures to support a combined operating model with the goal of becoming a unified system that operates in a way to best meets the needs of the communities served. The Regional Health System is led by Margaret Dimond, PhD and collectively includes 7 hospitals, 12,000+ employees, and $1.8B in net operating revenue.

The combined Regional Medical Group will comprise approximately 1,003 providers across 99 locations (19 ambulatory UMH-West sites of care and 80 Sparrow sites of care) and currently accounts for 1.5M annual patient encounters (annual patient encounters include office visits, surgeries, and procedures), 3.3M WRVUs, and annual budget of $342.5M.

The Location:

Lansing, MI is the state capital with a rich and diverse history. Most of what is known as Lansing today is the direct result of the city becoming an industrial powerhouse, which began with the founding of Olds Motor Vehicle Company in August 1897. Lansing, Michigan, is a diverse metropolitan area where you can go from a college campus to a waving wheat field in 10 minutes. Residents can observe the process of democracy while marveling at the beauty of a state Capitol building and then head up the road for Division I college football. Lansing is centrally located and within 90 minutes of 90% of the state’s population, so Lansing is not only a great place to explore on its own, but it’s also a fantastic base for day trips throughout the southern half of the lower peninsula.

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan and the largest in West Michigan. It is situated on the Grand River about 30 miles east of Lake Michigan. A feast for the senses, the city is home to public art and art museums, more than 100 live-music venues, 80+ breweries, and hundreds of local restaurants serving farm to fork meals. Grand Rapids has been named one of the best places to live by US News & World Report, Best Beer City 2022 by USA Today, and Top 20 Foodie City.
