University Medical Center is an Academic Medical Center with 446-licensed beds, Level I Trauma Center, and is affiliated with LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine. The CMO is responsible for defining the overall clinical strategy and direction of Academic Medical Center while partnering and collaborating with key stakeholders across the LCMC Health enterprise, Medical Center and LSU Health New Orleans, and Tulane University School of Medicine. University Medical Center desires a transformational and strategic Medical Executive with a strong operational and financial understanding of the complexities of an Academic Medical Center. The Chief Medical Officer will embody LCMC Health’s mission, vision, and values. The CMO will be a representative of the University Medical Center in the Greater New Orleans community, regionally, and nationally; and will advocate on behalf of the University Medical Center, the patients it serves, and its dedicated employees. Prior experience and leadership in Clinical Operations, cultural and financial turnarounds, and partnerships with Nursing, the Medical Staff, and the health system is preferred. Louisiana Children's Medical Center Health (LCMC Health) is a nonprofit network of healthcare providers in Southern Louisiana, based out of New Orleans. Members include academic centers, acute care facilities, and research hospitals. QUALIFICATIONS Education: • REQUIRED: o Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) o 10+ years of experience in clinical practice o Current and clear medical licensure in Louisiana (or ability to obtain such license) o Current Board Certification • Preferred: o Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field o Experience as a CMO (or equivalent) in a large, complex hospital or regional health system KEY FUNCTIONS: Leadership • Serve as a key leader of the University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) management team • Serve as spokesperson to UMCNO physicians to explain and obtain buy-in for UMCNO-sponsored clinical and quality initiatives • Collaborate frequently with other UMCNO leaders • Lead committees that evaluate clinical appropriateness of new medical technologies/programs and make recommendations concerning the relevance of such technologies/programs to UMCNO • Serve as a resource and consultant to UMCNO for physician recruitment, clinical program development, and overall hospital strategy • Attend local, regional, and national meetings sponsored by UMCNO to train and support quality improvement, risk management, patient safety, case management, medical staff affairs, and physician relations activities as requested • Utilize outcomes management techniques to monitor and improve patient care, quality, and safety • Serve as a spokesperson for evidence-based clinical practice, patient safety, and clinical loss prevention to health system leadership and clinicians • Lead and support community relationships on behalf of UMCNO Quality/Safety • Promote consistent, positive patient interactions that advance the agenda of excellent patient service • Lead clinical performance and patient experience expectations using quantifiable metrics across the health system • Facilitate measurable improvement in physician and patient satisfaction • Create a data-driven environment of quality, safety and cost improvement • Provide clinical support and guidance in the development and deployment of all quality and safety initiatives designed to increase the practice of evidence-based medicine within UMCNO Operations • Provide clinical support and consultation regarding cost-effective clinical resource management in UMCNO by sharing reports and recommendations regarding how to reduce the variable cost per case while enhancing clinical effectiveness • Develop systems to review utilization of resources and objectively measure outcomes of care in the inpatient and outpatient settings • Collaborate with supply chain leaders and medical staff on formulary and supply opportunities • Serve as a clinical resource and consultant to UMCNO case managers and UMCNO staff in the reduction of payer denials and in the denial and appeals process, as requested by the case management department and patient accounting services Medical Staff Relations • Foster an environment of collaboration, teamwork and partnership in UMCNO and with medical staff in regard to shared goals • Establish effective working relationship with all medical staff leaders to improve the functionality and effectiveness of the medical staff organization • Establish a strong sense of collaboration between UMCNO leadership and the medical staff when setting direction and policy • Represent medical staff viewpoints to management and relay management viewpoints to medical staff by maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between UMCNO leadership and physicians • Serve as a leader to Medical Staff Services regarding physician credentialing, peer review, utilization, and quality profiling • Responsible for implementation of appropriate onboarding of medical staff policies • Support and refine the disruptive physician and impaired physician policies and programs as needed • Provide recommendations in the development and/or revision of UMCNO policies and procedures pertinent to the medical staff and medical staff affairs Education • Lead educational sessions and provide ongoing in-service programs to medical staff regarding clinical resource management, appropriate documentation standards, utilization and quality issues, and quality improvement activities, in collaboration with other clinical leadership when requested • Educate physicians on the benefits of using UMCNO
