Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: American Board of certification (eligible) with clinical privileges to practice Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted). Position may also be sedentary. Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment physical. Position requires standing for extended periods, use of fingers and both hands, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to distinguish basic colors, emotional and mental stability. Hearing aid is permitted. Incumbents may experience exposure to blood and body fluids.. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects. This could include moving objects such as pieces of equipment and assistance in moving clients. ["Duties include but are not limited to the following: The Physician is to join a multidisciplinary team that includes pulmonary and critical care physicians, ICU Physician Assistants and Hospitalists in providing critical care services for both medical and surgical patients. The incumbent is expected to be involved in direct patient care and providing preceptorship for residents and medical students. The Physician functions independently providing leadership and medical oversight of all ICU operations with regular updates to the section chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Administrative duties include chairing the critical care committee, participating in the code blue committee, and providing daily oversight to ICU operations and physician assistant staff. When not providing ICU care, the incumbent will also perform other clinical duties including serving as an attending pulmonologist, performing inpatient and outpatient consultations, interpreting PFTs, teaching medical students, and supervising residents and fellows. A fully supported EBUS and electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy program is available on site. A candidate with Interest and proficiency in bronchoscopy is desirable and would join a robust team of advanced bronchoscopists as part of the thoracic oncology program. Sleep medicine can be included in the position but is not required. Applicants should have leadership skills and motivation to provide oversight of administrative operations, clinical care, and teaching with responsibilities that include the supervision of fellows from Wake Forest University Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program. The Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine program is highly focused on outcomes and strongly encourages research activity. There are opportunities for leadership in clinical trials. Candidates will have academic appointments with Wake Forest University commensurate on the level of experience and interest. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Administrative:\na) Serves as Medical Director of Intensive Care Program\nb) Serves as Director of Medicine Service Clinical Simulation Lab/Medical Education\nc) Provides oversight to Advance Practice Providers in the Pulmonary-ICU service\nd) Provides teaching and supervision for the medical students, residents and fellows rotating through the pulmonary-ICU service.\ne) Chairs and attends medical center committees as assigned by the Chief Medicine Service\nf) Operates as a leave approving official\ng) Participates in the selection of new staff and conducts annual performance evaluations for existing staff.\nh) Revises work schedules and assignments to promote productivity and coverage.\ni) Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance quality of care. 2. Clinical:\na) Provides quality patient-centered care for ICU patients.\nb) Provides quality patient-centered care in outpatient clinics.\nc) Professionally collaborates with other health professionals and medical center staff.\nd) Occasionally admits patients as staff attending on general medicine wards in rare instances were coverage is needed.\ne) Serves as staff attending for Pulmonary Specialty consult service.\nf) Participates in multidisciplinary care rounds VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
