The overall responsibilities of the Chief, Anesthesiology include, but are not limited to the following: Maintains involvement in all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative anesthesia care. Provides anesthesiology care to complex surgical patients/ Coordinates operating room schedule, facilitating the daily surgery schedule, active involvement with administering anesthesia. Provides oversight of staff that include Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, Nurse Practitioners and Anesthesia Technologists. Oversees the clinical aspects of the Anesthesia Service. Collaborates closely with the Chief of Surgery, Lead CRNA, OR Nurse Director and Perioperative Nurse Director to form the senior management team responsible for all operations of the operating room and out of OR anesthetizing locations. Ensures local policy and planning development, timely budget formulation, high quality and efficient clinical performance, and management of professional staff matters. Emphasizes safety and quality, access, and efficiency of care delivery. Participates in High Reliability Organization activities. Possesses leadership skills sufficient to provide direction for single and complex programs in the delivery of care. Assists in the recruitment of certified, licensed professional staff who are graduates of approved medical schools. Provides administrative and medical guidance to clinical service staff to provide outstanding care to eligible Veterans. Maintains an active role as a member of the facility strategic management team in defining the medical center's mission and goals, and in establishing short and long range plans. Ensures that appropriate systems to review, analyze, and evaluate care activities are established and maintained; and that corrective actions are initiated and carried as needed. Monitors and ensures medical staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, medical center policies, pertinent Joint Commission standards, and other appropriate regulations. Assists services in meeting VA Performance Measures and other performance metrics. Develops and monitor quality improvement measures for process improvement. Supervises a staff of employees to include administrative and personnel management functions. Provides leadership in the development of policies and strategies that support the health care system to successfully manage bioethical issues and protect patient and family rights. Ensures the quality and timeliness of the services provided and maintain customer satisfaction Ensures appropriate use of available resources and is responsible for inspiring, motivating, and guiding Anesthesiology Service staff in achieving the strategic goals and plans of the service. Collaborates with other Service Chiefs and program managers in fulfilling their responsibilities. Ensures lines of communication are open to all employees under his/her area of responsibility. Participates in the development of education programs and staff development models to facilitate career progression and to increase productivity and performance. Fosters a climate for practice that enhances job satisfaction through mutual responsibility for productivity and quality improvement. Collaborates in the establishment of and supports a system for recognition of accomplishments and achievements by employees. Provides leadership for and demonstrates safe work practices in compliance with safety rules and regulations. Implements appropriate disciplinary actions when infractions are committed against safe work practices. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards.
