Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), one of the largest universities in Virginia and among the nation’s top public research universities, invites applications and nominations for Senior Vice President for Health Sciences & CEO, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (SVP/CEO).
In its next SVP/CEO, VCU seeks a strong, visionary physician leader who will elevate the enterprise to the next level as a premier, nationally competitive academic medical center and set the strategic course to grow its research, education and clinical care missions. Reporting to the VCU President and to the VCU Health System board, the SVP/CEO has academic responsibility for the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, College of Health Professions and the Massey Cancer Center. As CEO of the $3.89 billion comprehensive Health System, this individual will provide visionary leadership and oversight for all VCU hospitals (1,125 beds) and the strategic guidance of VCU Medical Center, which has consistently been ranked the #1 hospital in the region while being the state’s largest safety net hospital. The 800-member MCV physician faculty practice plan president reports up through the Dean of the School of Medicine and the practice plan is a 501c3 under the VCU Medical Center. The SVP/CEO is a senior officer of the University and serves as a critical partner to the President in the University’s academic and strategic deliberations. The SVP/CEO is responsible for all aspects of the academic portfolio for VCU Health Sciences and the Health System’s administration. In addition, the SVP/CEO plays a vital internal and external role as the spokesperson for the Health System.
The successful candidate will be a leader with vision, breadth, and drive; proven intellectual leadership skills; demonstrated executive management experience in an equally complex setting and proven experience leading and inspiring diverse constituents across and throughout the University. An M.D. or the equivalent degree is required. Ideally, this individual will bring: a distinguished record of leadership and success in academic health center research, education and patient care missions; experience leading transparently, fairly, collectively and responsively; a deep understanding of both academic medical centers and universities and the broad threats and opportunities facing both.
